What's the big deal about this movie? People seem to really hate it. Look, if you don't know what to expect going into an Adam Sandler comedy, there's nobody to blame but yourself. This movie is perfectly fine. No, it's not laugh-out-loud funny. But it's amusing and very watchable (except for the life-saving ice scene near the end).
John Turturro is a special treat here. He's not doing anything spectacular, but he seems to believe in his character; he's fun to watch. Don't underestimate his sneakiness. On the other hand, Winona Ryder is nothing special in her role, seems like just about any actress could have played the part.
Cornball? Yes. Watch it anyway. You got something better to do?

If you can't enjoy Sandler singing David Bowie songs in a helicopter, well then, I just feel sorry for you.
