The Evil Dead is great campy horror. It's not scary, it's entertaining. The acting is all ham, the makeup effects are not that great, and the story isn't exactly compelling. But it makes up for that with style. Raimi throws in some creative camera work, and sets up some nice looking shots which keep the movie watchable. There's nothing like the old days of shoestring budgets and bad acting in horror films.
The best way to watch it is on DVD with the Bruce Campbell commentary track. Unlike most commentaries, this one is funny and interesting.

The tree attack sequence is must-see. If you haven't seen it before, it has the ability to shock even the most jaded viewers. Also, there are a couple brief (horror-movie-mandatory) boob shots.
