Gosford Park is a pretty good movie. But I don't think it's one of the top ten films of 2001. For starters, the "mystery" was too easy to figure out in my opinion, and the story is not all that compelling to begin with. It moves a little slower than necessary, and is only marginally entertaining. I know, I know. Robert Altman is a master of the ensemble film, and does an amazing job of handling all the accomplished actors and speaking parts of the film. My response to that is that Michael Bay is a master of visual effects and action sequences, but that doesn't mean his movies are any good. Being excellent at one aspect of film-making isn't enough. There is so much more needed to make a great film than just great direction.
It's worth seeing, and is a finely crafted film, even enjoyable. But be forewarned that Gosford Park has been over hyped.

I really like Clive Owen (Croupier). I expect him to have a break-out film any day now.
