John Cameron Mitchell has some real talent, I'd like to see him make more films.  I don't think Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a great film, however.  It's interesting, but it just didn't have anything to say.  It tells a fair little story, but I expected more from a movie with this type of tone, it comes off like it has something important to tell you, but it never really does, so I ended up not caring very much about the fate of the characters.  It's not fun enough to just sit back and enjoy because it asks the viewer to take it seriously.  Mitchell is clearly including some of his own life and upbringing into the story, but that only makes it interesting for him, not us.  It's a rock opera that seems better suited for 1979.

Interesting use of butterfly imagery in one of the final scenes (and various other scenes too).  It's subtle, but you'll notice it if you're paying attention.

crocoWife says:   "The movie is making me sleepy."
