Mean Girls follows in the fine "high school movie" tradition of students hating/loving each other. Think The Breakfast Club, Heathers, or even Jawbreaker. What's great about this entry in the genre is the character driven plot, not situational driven. The characters, while somewhat stereotypical, are surprisingly vivid. With motives that arise from character, not created by the screenwriter as a means to move to the next stop on the hi-jinks tour.
And it's funny too. I like the leader of the Mathletes, he has a few good scenes. Amy Poelher is hilarious as the "cool mom." The comedy isn't cheap either, it's not all fart gags (except one) or ridiculously contrived misunderstandings as found in most movies of this type. Of course, it was difficult to catch every joke as I was often distracted by Lindsay Lohan's rather large breasts. What is she, 17? 18? Jesus. They didn't have girls like her in my high school, I assure you.
And Mean Girls has a heart. You'll sympathize with these students, you'll remember the kids in your own school who were just like them. Like I care.
What I do care about is that the main character grows and learns throughout the film (and when I say grow, I'm referring to Lindsay Lohan's rack. Did you see her on Saturday Night Live in that Harry Potter sketch? Damn!). Yet the ending was a little too neat and happy for my taste. Everybody came out on top in their own way, which is repulsive considering all the back-stabbing that went on. The lesson I learned from this film is that I can talk shit about all my friends in school, yet be forgiven by breaking a piece of plastic and sharing the pieces with everyone. It didn't shake out that way at my school, I assure you.
By the way, I'm not obsessed with Lindsay Lohan's boobs. But did you see them?! Son of a bitch! She looks so good right now, I can only hope she doesn't pull a Jennifer Connelly and go all skeletor at some point. For now, the Olson twins can stick to entertaining the kiddies, while the "Lohan twins" entertain the adult males.
