Moulin Rouge! is unwatchable garbage. Easily the most annoying film of the year, I'm shocked that (at the time of this writing) it is being considered for Oscar nominations. Its hyper quick editing style is stolen from a bad music video, as if the director was afraid to show sustained takes of his actors and sets, for fear of the falseness showing through. The acting might be okay, I guess. But who can tell when you don't see anybody on screen for more than 5 fucking seconds before the next cut whisks you away to some other brightly lit neon widget or costumed performer. And what the hell is the point of John Leguizamo walking around on his knees for half the movie? Moulin Rouge! plays like a community theatre stage play. The tempo of the dialog, the musical numbers culled from yesterday's and today's easy listening "hits" (even though it's set at the turn of the 19th century). Ugh. It's bad movie-making at it's worst.
