Ringu is the original Japanese version of which the American The Ring was remade. It's basically the same movie but this version is more simplified in story, making it easier to follow. It's not as scary as the American version, I can see why someone would want to remake it. The hints of the scary stuff are there, and once you Americanize a story like this it becomes classic Hollywood horror.
