Ratings Methodology

Upon leaving the theatre I said to a friend "I think I saw some things in that movie that I'm not supposed to see."  What I meant was, unless you have actually been on a battlefield, you don't see the kinds of things that Saving Private Ryan shows you.  Four years later, that kind of graphic battle intensity has shown up in some other films, so that feeling of awe is gone now.  But the first time I saw it, it was just incredible.

All of the actors do a terrific job, there is some real talent in this cast.  But you don't need good actors to stage the landing on Omaha Beach the way Spielberg does, which is an insane collage of flying bullets, blood, grit and death.  You have to watch Saving Private Ryan for at least the first 20 minutes.  It's one of the most memorable sequences in film.

There is one thing that really nags me about Ryan, it's the modern day bookends to the film.  It softens the story too much for my taste.  I think it would have been much more powerful if those bookends were removed.
