I was expecting a mind-bender, but Solaris couldn't bend flexi-straws, let alone minds.

This is the kind of film that you will be looked down upon if you don't like.  Looked down on by those who do like it.  Those of "deeper understanding" than you, those with "more patience" and a more "open mind" than you.  Bullshit.  These people just love to feel superior in any way they can, so if they appreciate something because they found meaning in it, then you must not be capable of finding that meaning if you don't like it.  What about the possibility that we get it, we just don't care for it.  Maybe their idea of deep meaning is not as deep as mine.  Maybe to me, this film is plodding and obvious, while they find it mysterious and meaningful.

Whatever.  It's an okay film.  I wouldn't deride someone who is into it.  If you're into it, that's fine.  Personally, I could take it or leave it.  It's interesting enough, it's directed and acted well.  It just doesn't speak to me.  I'd recommend you see it, just so you can make up your own mind.  Solaris is the kind of movie that you have to decide for yourself, no matter what anyone else says, only you will know if the movie is for you.  And considering the content of the film, that's somewhat ironic.
