I remember walking out of the theatre after seeing Speed, and saying to crocoWife, "That's the kind of movie that makes me want to watch movies."  What I meant was that Speed serves as a reminder to me of why movies are such a big part of our culture.  There's nothing quite as fun as a movie that draws you in for two hours, but feels like two minutes.  This movie is "pure adrenaline" ... for real.  It's clever, well-directed, and mostly well-acted.

This is by far Keanu's best movie.  That's right, it's better than The Matrix, deal with it, fan-boy.  And Sandra Bullock is likeable because it was before she started making annoying little movies like The Net.

And the judicious use of cgi is very welcome (digitally removed gap in the freeway, etc).  When compared to summer action flicks like The Mummy Returns, Speed looks like Citizen Kane.  It should be no surprise that de Bont was the cinematographer for Die Hard.  I wish more movies were made like these, with a strong story, good plotting, and a worthwhile villain!  As opposed to pointless visual effects up the ass.

The scene where the bus hits the baby carriage.  It's staged so well, my heart jumps seeing it even now.
